The Equine Education that Every Responsible
Horse Person and Owner Should Have
Forest Hill Farms has selected the most
important areas of the Equine in building their curriculum.
Forest Hill Farms offers a basic horsemanship school that every
horse owner should attend. This course is fourteen to sixteen weeks in length and
includes the following classes;
CONFORMATION AND PARTS OF THE HORSE: What to
look for in the shape of the horse including the skeleton and musculature
for the performance that is expected of the horse.
COLOR AND MARKINGS: Used to identify horses
for registration, veterinary, or legal purposes. Includes the head, leg and
body markings as well as artificial markings such as brands, freeze brands
or hoof markings and lip tattoos.
HORSE SAFETY: Students will learn the safety
in riding and being around a horse.
FEET AND SHOES: The class will dissect a horse
leg from the knee down noting the importance of the canon bone, deep flexor
tendon, long and short pastern and hoof. They will also learn to trim and
shoe a horse with proper balance and angles as well as the importance of
different shoes and corrective shoeing.
MOUTHS AND BITS: Students will learn the
anatomy of the mouth, determine the age of the horse by its teeth, the
proper care of the mouth and floating of the teeth. We will also teach about
the different types of bits including English and Western.
TACK: This class will cover the parts of the
saddle both English and Western along with all training and riding equipment
and cleaning and the care of tack.
EMERGENCY VET CARE: This class will be on the most common equine illnesses.
What a person should look for and what to do.
BOOTS AND BANDAGES: Includes cleaning wounds,
caring for swelling and bruises, strains and foot injuries. Hot and cold leg
wraps, hot and cold therapy. Using proper boots for shipping and events.
NUTRITION AND FEED: Feeding management,
pasture and hay, grains, protein supplements, vitamins and minerals, feeding
performance horses, broodmare management and young growing horses.
BEDS AND BEDDING: Includes proper barn and
stall care for a healthier horse.
TRAINING THE YOUNG HORSE: Students will
participate in auditing a training seminar.
RED CROSS AND CPR: All students will attend a
course in first-aid and CPR and receive their first-aid cards. This class
will have a added fee for the course. Some students may already have their
first aid and CPR cards and need not take this class.
